American Basic Economy Ticket Cancellation Policy

Normally, the basic economy ticket is not refundable when you book it with American Airlines, but you can always cancel it within 24 hours.

If you book at least 2 days before departure, you have 24 hours to make changes or cancel your ticket for a refund. Changes and refunds to the original form of payment are not allowed after 24 hours.

If you booked directly through American, you can change or cancel your ticket online. For flight changes, you may have to pay a difference in fare.

After 24 hours

If you cancel your Basic Economy fare ticket on or after January 17, 2024, you’ll receive travel credit for an additional fee. In order to qualify:

·         Before canceling, you must provide your AAdvantage® number.

·         In addition, your trip must be on a flight marketed and operated by an American airline within the 50 states.

·         AA.com or the American app can be used to cancel before the first flight departs.

A travel credit will not be issued if the fee exceeds the ticket price.

American Refundable Tickets Cancellation Policy

You have 24 hours from the time you first buy your ticket for a refund if you booked at least 2 days before departure. The 24-hour refund policy applies to all ticket types, but you have to cancel the trip to get a refund.* Reservations booked as part of group block do not qualify for the 24-hour refund.

Cancellation after the 24-hour locking period results in a refund, even if the ticket is refunded. It only requires a small additional fee when you book, but it ensures your security while being able to cancel or postpone your plan at any time.

American Non-Refundable Ticket Cancellation Policy

 A non-refundable ticket may cost less, but if you need to make changes you’ll be charged a change fee and any difference in fare. If you buy a Basic Economy fare, changes are not allowed.

You can cancel your award ticket anytime on aa.com. We will reinstate your AAdvantage® miles up to 1 year after the ticket issue date as long as you cancel your ticket before the first flight departs.
American Airlines Award Tickets have an entirely different booking process, and making changes to canceling reservations is very different from other types.

·         No fees will be charged if you choose to change your AAdvantage® travel award reservations before ticketing. If you change your AAdvantage® travel award reservation after the original ticketing, additional miles or fees may apply for each ticket and will be due at the time of reissue. Mileage requirements and fees are subject to change without notice.

·         If the reservation is canceled before departure and the ticket is not expired, AAdvantage® mileage will be reinstated.

·         Expired tickets cannot be reinstated. A portion of the miles used to claim an award ticket may have expired, but only those miles that have not expired will be reinstated. There will be no reinstatement of partially used awards.

·         AA cannot be held responsible for any changes or cancellations to award reservations.
